MAGIC BEANS:
THE MUSICAL

BY Solo Chicken Productions, THE SPIRIT PROJECT

“Being yourself can be the hardest thing to be.”

Buckle up and get into party mode!  Magic Beans: The Musical is an original musical created by Solo Chicken Productions, The Spirit Project with the help of some incredible artistic friends.  Hop on the Margaritta-ville and head across Spirit Bay for a story of friendship, courage, and generosity.   Narrated by the charming Ms. Shooting Star, we meet our iconic characters, the selfish princesses and their mean Mom (aka the queen, aka the mother who doesn’t know), the cowardly pirates and their backwards words duck Oreo Jr. and of course, the rude ballroom dancing dogs. Throw in some magic beans and Kevin’s ex-girlfriend Dee and you find yourself on the journey of a lifetime.

Created, written and performed, by The Spirit Project artists, Magic Beans: The Musical is the groups most inclusive, ambitious and iconic work yet, featuring direction by Lisa Anne Ross, an original score by Kylie Fox, videography by Strike Pictures and choreography by Sydney Hallett.  The company first started working on the project in the Fall of 2023 and spent over two years building every aspect of the production with the goal of showcasing the gifts of our artists.  Captions, live choreographic support, on-stage partners and ASL Interpretation help make this production accessible for audiences and artists alike.

What is the Spirit Project?

Launched in 2019 in partnership with L’Arche Fredericton and The Charlotte Street Arts Centre, The Spirit Project is a group of artists with and without intellectual and/or physical disabilities, Autism and/or dual diagnosis who have been playing, creating, and performing together for the past six years.  The creative goal of The Spirit Project is to make beautiful art that celebrates the artistic impulses of the artists and highlights the creative and community benefits of inclusion and access.

This is what theatre is for, an exercise in community.  I loved it in so many ways.  The structuring, the incorporation of video, the subtitling (LOVE the subtitles), the interpretation, the design, the music.  A truly beautiful show and so %#&#’ing funny.

These days, the world can feel overwhelmingly heavy, full of tension, complexity, and questions about identity, belonging, and the future. But what I witnessed on stage reminded me that light still breaks through. That an inclusive, compassionate world where every person’s value and voice are recognized is not just a dream, but something already in the making.
