Japanese/Western Fusion Dance with Takako Segawa
Takako creates dance workshops that explore movement through the fusion of Japanese-influenced energy work and Western contemporary dance practices. Drawing on her years of personal exploration and international experience, she guides participants through movement that connects breath, intention, rhythm, physical awareness, improvisation, and personal expression. The workshop is open to all levels and encourages participants to discover their own presence and expression through movement.

In The Body with Marie-Josée Chartier
Following a one hour physical and vocal warm-up, the participants will be invited to create a series of very short works integrating voice, text and movement loosely crafted from improvisational and imagistic prompts; these short but mighty études will be created either solo, in duos or in group. All of it based in action, collaboration and impulsion combined with a spirit of discovery.

Solo Chicken Productions endeavours to make training available to anyone and everyone looking to learn, play and create! This class is offered through a “Pay-What-You-Can” format. You will find a suggested price listed ($35 per class), but you are encouraged to pay the amount you feel you best fits you! That might a bit less or a bit more! Your tuition goes towards running our programs and paying our instructors the fees they deserve!

Meet the instructor
Takako Segawa (she/her)
Takako Segawa is a contemporary dancer, choreographer/producer, and performer. Born in Japan, she trained in traditional Japanese arts as well as contemporary movement practices. She graduated from Nippon Sports Science University and London Contemporary Dance School.
With over 25 years of experience as a performer and choreographer/ producer, Takako has worked and performed internationally across Europe and Asia, including in the UK, Italy, Slovenia, Greece, Indonesia, China, Singapore, Taiwan, and Japan. From 1999 to 2009, she produced Contemporary Dance Arts Vol. 1–5 in Kochi and Fukuoka, Japan inviting artists from Europe.
Based in Canada since 2009, Takako has collaborated with numerous artists and companies, including Tedd Robinson, Corpus, Maxine Heppner, Michael Coldwell, Xing Ban Fu Ballet, Susan Lee, Suzanne Liska, Limitless Productions and Quote Unquote.
Takako has received support from the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, Ottawa City Arts Funding, and the Kochi Ministry of Performing Arts.

Meet the instructor
Marie-Josée Chartier (she/her)
A versatile artist, whose talents transcend the boundaries of dance, music, opera and multi-media, Marie-Josée Chartier moves easily between her many roles as choreographer, performer, director, vocalist, educator and mentor. Her dynamic choreography is influenced by contemporary music, literature and the visual arts as she explores and deconstructs the vulnerabilities of human beings.
Her acclaimed pieces have been presented at major festivals and by dance companies across Canada, Europe and Latin America. Her work was the subject of several documentary films. Since 2003, in addition to her activities as a performer and choreographer, Marie-Josée directs/stages contemporary opera and multi-media productions for: Gryphon Trio, Architek Percussion, Queen of Puddings Music Theatre, Tapestry Opera, Canadian Opera Company, Theaturtle and l’Ensemble Contemporain de Montréal (ECM+).
Chartier receives the following awards: Jacqueline Lemieux Prize (2015); K.M. Hunter Artist Award (2001), 9 Dora Mavor Moore Award nominations; recipient of a Dora for fifty- one pieces of silver (2002) and shared two Doras with the collective URGE for And by the way Miss (2005). Marie-Josée formed Chartier Danse in 2003 to support her projects and create a cornerstone for large scale productions and partnerships in Canada and abroad.
