The Animating Our Legends Program took place at Ridgeview Middle School in Oromocto in 2010. The aim was to work with First Nations youth to collectively create a new theatrical work based on a series of Maliseet Legends. Ten students participated in the program and worked closely with Lisa Anne Ross, Nick Brennan, and Chris Polchies, and performed a work based on the Totems of the Four Directions (as given to them by Maliseet Elder Gwen Bear). Students studied shadow puppetry, drumming, and made their own puppets as part of the program. Students developed a basic understanding of the structure of a play and the steps needed to imagine, rehearse and then finally perform a work from scratch and all the terminology that goes with it.
